On 24th August, we welcomed Mrs. Fiona Moiyadi our guest speaker parent-JKG, in connection with our ongoing inquiry about celebrations and culture.
Mrs. Moiyadi presented a wonderful snapshot about her beautiful country New Zealand- An island country in the southern hemisphere, with 4 major seasons, Kiwi being the national fruit as well as the national bird. Interestingly the colloquial term for the people too is Kiwi! We also learned a few forms of greeting in the native Maori language- Morena- Good Morning and Kia Ora- Hello.
The session ended with a video about the Matariki celebration. Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in midwinter and for many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year.
It was a very interesting presentation interspersed with song and dance, which made it so much more stimulating for our little learners.
We are very grateful to Mrs Moiyadi for this wonderful experience.
Whakawhetai Koe – Thank You!
