As part of our August month’s ongoing theme aptly titled – Let’s Celebrate, we at Beaumont devote the last weeks of the month to celebrate the festivals/culture of our expat/ foreign students.
On 22nd August we gathered in the MPH to learn about the Japanese Festival – Tana Bata, or the Star Festival which is celebrated in Japan on the 7th of July, every year. People celebrate by writing their wishes on small pieces of paper (called tanzaku) and hanging them on bamboo branches with hopes they will come true. Other decorations including origami designs and colorful streamers may also be part of the display.
Our young students viewed the Tana Bata story which celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi. They learned about the significance and the way this amazing festival is celebrated in Japan. We also explored other aspects of Japan and its culture- location on the world map, the flag and the National anthem. We began and ended the session with Japanese greetings too!!! It was a joy to see our Japanese students beaming with pride, with the focus being on their home country.
Students in their respective classes created wonderful art and craft items related to this festival, later during the day.
